KABUL (SW): Finally, the Biometric Identity Cards Issuing Authority (BICIA) has announced to roll-out the much waited cards in three months’ time.
The BICA director Humayoun Mohtat told a presser here on Wednesday that the process to issue the new cards would start from the capital Kabul. He added up to 500000 citizens that also include government employees who registered themselves with the BICIA would receive the new cards. Mohtat said 30 working groups of 13 BICIA employees have been formed to process the cards.
About the recruitment of staff for this mega process, the BICIA director said the Administrative Reforms Commission has been tasked to do this. He added the former employees of the BICIA would be given priority. He stressed that the National Unity Government (NUG) is committed to rolling out this process.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has approved the amended draft of the Census Law authorizing the printing of the word “Afghan” on the electronic ID cards as the “nationality and ethnicity” of the holder of the card. This issue kept the rolling out of the new cards in limbo so far.
Meanwhile, there is still some opposition to it. Nematullah Ghafari, a member of the Wolesi Jirga (lowe house), told Salam Watandar the rolling out of new identity cards is ‘illegal’ without the approval of the parliament.
