Balkh residents warn to cut off power supply for Kabul

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (SW): A number of residents in northern Balkh province have threatened to cut-off power supply lines to the capital Kabul if their demands for reduction in power tariff are not met.

These residents of the province gathered at the Balkh provincial council on Saturday and asked the government not to ‘discriminate’ when it comes to setting the electricity tariff for different areas. They asked all residents not to pay a penny unless a uniform tariff is implemented across the country.

They warned that if the government and De Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) do not meet their demands, they would stage a massive demonstration and would cut off of the power supply line to Kabul.

Qari Mir Royeen Ansari, one of the protestors, said that they would cut off the electricity line, which goes through Mazar-e-Sharif and to Kabul if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, Afzal Hadid, head of the provincial council in Balkh, urged upon the residents not to pay their bills if the government paid no attention to their complaints.

He said that the government should not ‘discriminate’ when it comes to serving people.

A number of religious scholars also raised their voices over this issue and pronounced the raise in tariff as ‘un-Islamic’.
