Balkh officials blamed for racially profiling citizens

KABUL (SW): Security officials in Balkh province harass and persecute people of other provinces, particularly from the southern and eastern provinces, the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members said on Monday.

Nawab Mangal, a member of the house, said during the session that some security officials harass and even apprehend poor laborers hailing from southern and eastern provinces. He charged that those behind these discriminative measures are aiming to promote ethnic hatred for their political aims.

Habibi Saadat, another member of the house, said insecurity and ragging violence in Kandahar and Helmand provinces have forced many locals to flee to Balkh for business and jobs, but they are facing discrimination there. She said every Afghan has the Constitutional right to visit and live freely in any part of the country.

It was mentioned that the security officials in Balkh have snatched and torn apart the identity cards of a number of people hailing from different parts of the country. The Wolesi Jirga urged the government to take action against such individuals.

Meanwhile, Muneer Ahmad Farhad, spokesman for the provincial government in Balkh, has told Salam Watandar all security organs have been directed to ensure no one is discriminated.
