Baghlan’s provincial council member has allegedly taken refuge in Europe

PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): A member of Baghlan’s provincial council has reportedly taken asylum in one of the European Union (EU) countries.

A member of Baghlan’s provincial council on conditions of anonymity has told Salam Watandar that Norzia Aimaq, a member of the Council, has been absent from the sessions of the provincial council due to her seeking asylum in Europe.

According to the source, another member of the Council is also trying to immigrate to Europe. Assadullah Shahbaz, the head of Baghlan’s provincial council, confirmed Norzai Aimaq’s asylum seeking in a European country, but he did not provide details.

Mohammad Hanif Koh-Gadai, the secretary of the provincial council, said that the Council has officially reported on the continuing absence of Norzia Aimaq to the Independent Director of Local Governance (IDLG), but the IDLG has not taken any action regarding Aimaq’s official termination from the Council. “Based on the law Norzia AImaq’s membership should be terminated and a new member should be appointed”, informed Koh-Gadai.

But, Sayed Ahmad Khamosh, head of public relations at IDLG, claims that the continuing absence of Norzai Aimaq was brought to the attention of the IDLG by civil society activist, not the Council. “We have requested clarification on the matter from Baghlan’s provincial council”, added Khamosh.

Najia Aimaq, the sister of Norzia Aimaq, rejected the allegations of her sister’s asylum seeking in Europe. “My sister has not taken asylum in Europe. She is out of the country of treatment”, justified Aimaq.
