PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): Members of the Baghlan Provincial Council (PC) and the civil society have expressed their annoyance towards the appointment of ‘elderly’ Abdul Hai Nemati as governor for this province.
Those opposing this change in the leadership at the provincial government believe the newly appointed governor is ‘too old’ to take care of the affairs. They fear this move could lead to the eventual fall of Baghlan to the Taliban.
Mehboobullah Ghafari, deputy chairman for the provincial council, told Salam Watandar the law and order situation in the province is fragile which needs a young governor to handle it. The local elders also believe young and talented individual should be given the chance to improve the situation in this restive province.
Defending the move, Muneera Yousufzada, spokesperson for the Independent Directorate of Local Government (IDLG), said the new governor has not reached retirement age, and the previous one was replaced as he had reached the retirement age. She said skills of good governance and popularity among the masses are among the key factors behind the appointment at key posts.
Due to ragging violence in the province, the government recently replaced the police and intelligence chiefs as well as the governor of Baghlan.
