FAIZABAD (SW): Thousands of people in Badakhshan province are faced with grim threats of land sliding and other natural disasters.
Locals officials believe up to five thousands families in forty villages are in dire need of aid and support. Gul Mohammad Bedar, deputy governor, told Salam Watandar that the geologists have recommended to relocate these vulnerable families to safer places immediately. He informed that in collaboration with the national committee for disaster management, a list of the vulnerable families have been sent to the capital Kabul for relocation.
The deputy governor said residents of only seven districts have been relocated so far.
The vulnerable families fear if the government failed to provide them necessary aid in time, a human catastrophe would emerge here. Mehboobullah and Sohbatullah, two such residents of Yaftal Payeen district, informed cracks have emerged in mountains near their homes, and it can cause land sliding anytime soon. They informed more than 60 families are facing the risk here. They added these people are poor, and cannot afford to relocate on their own.
Syed Abdullah Humayoun, director provincial chapter of the National Disasters Management Agency (NDMA), said in this regard that the technical teams have been sent to survey the area, and up to 800 vulnerable families have already been moved out of many villages to safer areas.
Officials promised to establish more relocation centers for the vulnerable families after the completion of the technical survey.
