Attempt on Kofi’s life widely condemned

KABUL (SW) – The attempt on the life of Fawzia Kofi, female member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) has been widely condemned.

NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo has also condemned the attack. “Attack on Fawzia Koofi is "yet another despicable attempt at silencing voices of those who advocate for peace and equal opportunities”, he said while calling for justice and reiterating support for the Afghan security forces.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack on Fawzia Koofi in strongest terms. “President Ghani prays for the speedy recovery of Ms. Koofi, who was wounded in the attack, and emphasizes that cowardly attacks on Afghan women will not hinder their purposeful efforts to preserve gains of the 19 years”, he said in a statement.

Abdullah Abdullah, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, called for investigations to capture perpetrators behind attack on Fawzia Koofi on the main Kabul – Parwan highway. “I strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Ms Fawzia Koofi @FawziaKoofi77 and call upon the government to identify and apprehend the culprits and possible motive for the attack”, he tweeted.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The female MP is said to be in stable condition now.
