Attack on Musala-e-Mazari: Death toll surges to 11

KABUL (SW) – The death toll from Thursday’s shelling on the ceremony marking death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari has surged to 11 with at least 95 people wounded.

Nusrat Rahimi, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, told Salam Watandar up to 11 people, including three women, got killed and 95 more got wounded in this attack in the western part of the city. Though, the Daesh terrorist group took responsibility for the attack, but the MoI spokesman said initial investigations suggest the Taliban are behind the attack.

The ceremony to mark the 24th death anniversary of Mazari, slain leader of the Hezb Wahdat Islami, came under mortar attacks on Thursday when a number of top government officials and politicians were present at the venue.

Among them included CEO Abdullah Abdullah, former president Hamid Karzai, foreign minister Salahuddin Rabbani and presidential candidates such as Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Abdul Lateef Pidram and Ahmad Wali Masoud. Pidram was among those wounded in this attack. Office of Atmar noted in a statement eight of their security guards sustained injuries.

The MoI announced that the man behind shelling mortars has been taken into custody and two more men involved in this incident are killed in exchange of fire with the security forces.
