KABUL (SW) – Mohammad Haneef Atmar, candidate for the presidency and former National Security Adviser, said on Sunday he would attend the proposed Moscow meeting with the Taliban.
In a series of tweets, the former NSA said he would join a number of Afghan politicians to attend this meeting, which he described as an important step towards intra-Afghan talks. The conference in Moscow is set to take place next week.
“We would defend the system of Islamic republic, Constitution, the achievements and the national institutions”, Atmar said. He said the government should not look at the peace process through a ‘small window of government’, and should instead respect the role of politicians and the nation for peace and safety of the system and national institutions.
There are reports Atta Mohammad Noor, Mohammad Ismail Khan would represent Jamiat-e-Islami party and Mohammad Mohaqiq would represent the Wahdat party in the Moscow meeting. The Russian Embassy in Kabul has said no official from the Moscow administration would take part in these talks.
It is said the Kabul government is not invited to the conference. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said no Afghan official would attend this meeting, and it is not going to help with the peace process in the country.
