Atmar in Beijing to push Pakistan for talks with Taliban

18/04/2016

KABUL (SW): The National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar is in China to ask Beijing to insert pressure on Pakistan for talks with Taliban.

As an influential regional power, China has notable clout over Pakistan and it is also a member of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) alongside the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan working to bring the Taliban to the talks. Atmar is scheduled to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Tuesday.

Tawab Gorzand, spokesman for the National Security Council (NSC) told Salam Watandar that Atmar would also hold talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister during his trip. He went on to say that the matters of bilateral interests, particularly peace and stability in the region would be at the center of Atmar’s engagements.

Earlier this year, the QCG had asked the Taliban to send their representatives for talks with the Afghan government but instead they have declared another season of fighting.
