BADAKHSHAN (SW): Officials in Badakhshan said that the water-users associations have been established in a number of Badakhshan districts in order to manage water resources and prevent disputes over water distribution.
According to the officials, members of the water-users associations have been able to prevent disputes over water distribution, in addition to managing water resources and provide training on how to use them.
Rafi Bahman, responsible for the sub-river region of Kokche told Salam Watandar that before the establishment of water-users associations, maintenance of canals and management of water resources was a major difficulty for this office, however, after the establishment of 17 water-users associations, management problems and the issues with the use of water resources have been resolved.
According to Bahman, water-users associations, in addition to preventing conflicts, have been able to persuade people in the maintenance, repair of damaged canals and fair distribution of water.
Officials at the water-users associations in Badakhshan told Salam Watandar that by using the new water resource management methods to prevent water shortages by preparing a timetable for high water season and low water season, creating sub-groups for fair distribution of water, they have been able to prevent disputes over water in the province.
The authorities of the sub-river region of Kokche said that water-users associations have been created under the Water Act of the departments of water resources management of Ministry of Water and Energy for several years now, which has standardized the use of water resources in the country.
According to these officials, the restoration of damaged sites, the reconstruction of canals, fair distribution of water, warning of droughts and adjusting the agricultural system based on the amount of the water flow are among the main duties of these associations.
