KABUL (SW) – The Independent Election Commission on Tuesday declared incumbent President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani eventual winner of the polls held in September last year.
Announcing the long-awaited final results of the Sept. 28 polls, Hava Alam Nuristani, the female chief election commissioner, said Ghani has secured the required minimum of 50 per-cent-plus votes to secure the top position. Ghani secured 923592 votes out of the total of 1.823948 votes with 50.64 %.
Ghani’s main rival, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah came second with 39.5% of votes.
In the preliminary results, Ghani, the head of the National Unity government, was declared the winner with 923,868 votes and Abdullah Abdullah got 720,990 votes.
A few minutes before the election results were announced, Nur Rahman AKhlaqi, a member of Abdullah’s Peace and Stability team, wrote: "An illegitimate body announces an illegitimate result in explicit violation of the law and it is a ‘coup’ against democracy and votes of the people. The leaders of
Peace and Stability team have reached a clear decision on the government's announcement of the team's address have come to a clear conclusion. What happens next is the responsibility of those who violate the law and disrupt the rules of the game”.
