MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW) – Angered and frightened by surge in armed robberies and killings, dozens of Mazar-e-Sharif residents on Saturday took to the streets.

The protesters said at least eight armed robberies have taken place last week alone in the Hayat area of the city involving motorcycle riders killing two civilians. They said such armed snatchings and killings involving motorcycle riders are on the rise.

On Thursday, a restaurant owner, Hamid, was killed by motorcycle riders when he resisted their bid to deprive him of cash and valuables. Hamid’s grieving father is employee at a public school who informed that such incidents surged in the city in the past six months.

Spokesman for the police, Sher Jan Durrani, informed two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the killing of Hamid. According to officials, lack of enough police force is one of the reasons behind surge in such crimes.

Criminal cases surged in Mazar-e-Sharif following the departure of former governor, Atta Mohammad Noor.
