Arg irked by Mujahid naming Taliban as ‘angels’

14/01/2017

KABUL (SW): Arg, the Presidential palace has sternly rebuffed Abdul Hakeem Mujahid, advisor of the High Peace Council (HPC) who pronounced the Taliban as ‘angels’ and ‘sacred group’.

Days after the Taliban claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in Kabul which claimed the lives of more than 30 people, the remarks by HPC advisor caused uproar. In his remarks, Mujahid painted former president Najibullah as ‘traitor’, and tagged Ahmad Shah Massoud as a ‘mutineer’ and Burhanudin Rabani as the one responsible for all the troubles the country is facing.

“The government would not allow any one misuse the freedom of speech to name the murderers of children and women, those who damaged places of worship and public properties, as ‘angels of peace’”, a statement by the presidential palace said.

The statement added that disrespectful words about the leaders and national personalities will not be tolerated. The government will look into the issue and share the findings with the people, it added.  The Arg has also urged upon people to have faith in the government and keep unity among their ranks under these difficult times.

There have been calls from different quarters for the arrest of Abdul Hakim Mujahid.

Leaders of the Jamiat party in particular have taken serious notice of the remarks made by the HPC advisor. Atta Mohammad Noor, acting governor of Balkh, labeled Mujahid a foreign spy. Former vice president Yunis Qanooni, and presidential envoy Ahmad Zia Massoud have also denounced the statement.
