Any attack on media a war crime: Afghan journalists

13/10/2015

KABUL(SW): Afghanistan Journalists Union and a number of media activists on Tuesday showed reaction to the statement issued by the Taliban against TOLO TV and 1TV which included death threats against their related staff.

The journalists and heads of the media said that any attack on media is considered as a war crime.

Recently the Taliban accused two major television stations, Tolo and 1TV, of being spies for the U.S “invaders and their puppets” in the Afghan government, after they aired reports from Kunduz detailing atrocities and rape committed by the Taliban.

“If the Taliban continue to threaten Afghan media, the media in return will boycott the coverage of their stories.” Said Fahim Dashti, Spokesman for Afghanistan Journalists Union.

Senators also condemned the Taliban’s statement against Tolo TV and 1TV.

Media and freedom of speech are the two vital achievements over the past 14 years in Afghanistan but reporters have been very vulnerable in terms of their safety in recent years.

Based on the reports by Nai-Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan, most cruelties against the reporters have been committed by the Taliban.
