KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has underlined the need for improvement in conduct and behavior of the Afghan National Police (ANP).
At the “Conference on Human Rights and Police” here on Sunday, Sima Samar, head of the AIHRC, said the policemen in general do not behave properly with children, women and disabled persons. “Governance will not improve unless police conduct themselves according to the law and behave professionally”, added Samar.
Taj Mohammad Jahid, Minister of Interior, addressing the conference said law enforcement is the main duty of the police, but the raging war in the country has forced the police to fight on multiple fronts resulting in poor performance in some areas. “We have our shortcomings in the police, but we are making efforts to professionalize our forces”, vowed Jahid.
Farid Hamidi, the Attorney General of Afghanistan, highlighted the importance of cooperation between the police and the prosecutors. He said police play vital role in villages as they provide security to public which has resulted in people’s reliance on police.
The AIHRC signed a trilateral agreement with the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior and the National Directorate of Security last year which resulted in creation of the “Ombudsmen Office”, a watchdog for reporting security forces’ behavior and cases of abuses in the security sector to the AIHRC.
