KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan National Journalist Union (ANJU) has blamed the government for being secretive about sharing information with the press.
The ANJU held a conference titled “Triangle of Access to Information” in Kabul on Tuesday aimed at enhancing cooperation and coordination between media, the government and the Oversight Commission for Access to Information (OCAI).
Fahim Dashti, executive director for ANJU, said the tradition of withholding information from journalists still prevails. He said according to modern and democratic values, the government is guardian of information not the sole owner of it. “According to the Access to Information Law, every government entity is responsible to create centers for providing information, but the National Unity Government (NUG) has not put efforts in this regards”, said Dashti.
Mujib Khilwatgar, executive president of Nai- Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan, addressing the gathering said the government is withholding information regarding terrorist attacks and corruption in its offices.
Meanwhile, Dawa Khan Minapal, deputy spokesman for the President, said the government is committed to resolve problems of journalists. He said based on the Access to Information Law, the government is bound to provide information to journalists.
Almost 5 months ago, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani issued a 7 point decree directing all government spokesmen, ministers, governors, and other government representatives to provide accurate and timely information to journalists.
