Analysts warn against ethnic politics

25/10/2016

KABUL (SW): Analysts believe there is a substance behind the Vice President Gen. Abdul Rasheed Dostum’s claims regarding ethnic politics played by leaders of the National Unity Government (NUG).

Talking to a group of journalists in Jawzjan last evening, Dostum charged the President Ashraf Ghani and his Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah for promoting ethnic politics instead of striving to resolve the issues at hand. Jawed Kohistani, an analyst, said in this regard that a number of areas in the country such as Helmand, Faryab and Kunduz have witnessed a surge in militancy due to the ethnic politics by the NUG leaders. “Unfortunately this is something that would lead the country to even greater crisis if a solution is not chalked for it and reforms are not introduced”, he said.

Younus Fakoor, another commentator on political affairs, said that all leaders of the NUG have the problem of being racist, and are busy appointing their followers at key posts instead of worrying for the state of the country. He urged the government leaders to strive for good governance instead of fueling internal differences. Mohammad Rahman Ogli, former member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), said in this regard that the VP has raised this issue on a number of occasions and has repeatedly called for reforms but the President has not paid attention.

The President’s office however, has rejected the remarks made by the VP. In a communiqué, it said that considering the situation of the country, such remarks by the first VP hinder the reforms process and provide opportunities for the enemies of Afghanistan to exploit the situation.
