KABUL (SW): Analysts are skeptical about the latest concerns raised by the Russian president in regard to insecurity in Afghanistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said India and Russia were both interested in deepening "constructive multilateral cooperation" to help rebuild war-torn Afghanistan where decisive action was needed to defeat terrorism. In an interview with IANS and Sputnik news agencies, Putin said Afghanistan was of concern as the "situation on the territory between India and Russia remains tense". "The developments in Afghanistan still raise concern. Decisive actions are required to help that country in dealing with such challenges and threats as terrorism, extremism, and illicit drug trafficking," Putin said.

Muhibullah Sharif, an analyst on geo-political affairs told Salam Watandar that the remarks made by the Russian president are merely aimed at securing Moscow’s interests in the region. He added that Putin has expressed concerns over situation in Afghanistan at a time when Russian forces recently conducted joint military drills in Pakistan, which is harboring the terrorists responsible for the chaos in Afghanistan.

“Not only Russia, the US too has its interests in the region, and these world powers even turn regional countries against each other for their own benefits”, he said. Sharif underlined that Afghanistan and other regional countries must make sure they are not manipulated.

Mohammad Younus, another commentator on political affairs, said that Moscow wants to contain violence from reaching its geography via Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Moin Mrastyal, an analyst on strategic affairs believe Russia is trying to develop regional consensus in the wake of growing terrorism. He stressed that Moscow’s sincere efforts in this regard should be open heartedly welcomed.
