Analysts skeptical about shuffle in police ranks

KABUL (SW): Following a latest shuffle in the ranks of the police, analysts have called for professionalism and transparency in the security matters.

On Friday, the Ministry of Interior appointed new police chiefs for the capital Kabul and a number of other provinces citing reforms and improvement as the main reasons. But, analysts argue these changes have been made to please some influential individuals and comprise on security.

Jawed Ghafoor, an analyst on security affairs, told Salam Watandar such ‘complimentary’ appointments cannot bring peace and stability. He called for merit-based appointments and transfers, and reforms in the security sector. This would further deteriorate the security situation unless the police force is de-politicized, and professionalism replaces nepotism, he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has defended the new transfers and postings. Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Ministry, said the changes are in line with the recommendation by the Minister for Interior, and have been approved by the President. “Specialization, experience and good leadership skills have been considered in these appointments”, he said.

A day earlier, new police chiefs were appointed for Kabul, Nuristan, Paktia, Baghlan and Nangarhar provinces.
