KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani did not receive a warm welcome upon his visit to Pakistan that indicated nothing significant can be expected from this tour.
During President Ghani’s second official trip to Pakistan in four years on Thursday, he was received by an advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan.
Political analyst, Intezar Khadim, told Salam Watandar this sort of attitude on the part of Pakistan indicated Islamabad was not willing and sincere in helping with the peace process in Afghanistan. He even considered it as ‘disrespect’ to the Afghan President.
Pakistan’s former ambassador to Afghanistan, Rustam Shah Momand, said in this regard that the Afghan President is faced with multiple political challenges at home, which undermines his ability to play pivotal role in the peace process. He added the U.S. is spearheading the whole peace process, and the Afghan government was not represented at the Moscow conference either.
Momand added Pakistan too has no significant role in the peace process, and the recent trip by the Afghan President would have no impact on the peace process. He added matters related to the refugees and border fencing are likely to be discussed. He added Afghanistan is likely to push Pakistan for relocate families of the Taliban leaders back to Afghanistan.
In the views of Yonus Fakoor, an analyst of political affairs, Pakistan indeed has a key role to play in the Afghan peace process. He added Pakistan has full control over the Taliban and can urge them to join the peace process.
