KABUL (SW): A number of analysts while deploring the rejection of Presidential decree on electoral reforms, have noted that leaders of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and those in the parliament only care about their personal gains.

This comes at a time when the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday rejected with majority the Presidential decree aimed at reforms in the electoral bodies. The GNU sees this decree crucial for ensuring fair and timely elections in the country while the Wolesi Jirga asserts that the move to amend the electoral bodies is in contrast to the Constitution.

Shah Hussain Murtazawai, Deputy Spokesman for the President, has said that the government is committed to bring reforms in election systems and it would be discussed with members of political parties in the country.

Legal affairs’ experts told Salam Watandar that the government’s leaders as well as the Wolesi Jirga members are firm on their stances to defend their positions at all cost.

Tahir Hashemi, a law expert, said that those in the executive and legislative bodies, which in fact are the pillars of the state, want to remain in power and seek personal gains. Kabir Ranjbar, another expert, said on the rejection of the Presidential decree on election reforms that it was not a logical decision considering the current situation in the country.

Many citizens said in this regard that once the President’s decree was rejected by the lawmakers they lost their trust in the Wolesi Jirga’s members.

Abdul Saboor and Ali Ahmad; two citizens in Kabul said that the Wolesi Jirga should have approved the decree so that the election would be held sooner.

Shah Hussain Murtazawi told Salam Watandar that the government also expected the Wolesi Jirga to approve the decree. He added that the government is currently consulting with political parties, lawyers and civil society institutions and would soon announce its next step.

Meanwhile, a number of Wolesi Jirga members who in personal capacity approved the Presidential decree on election reforms, said that the rejection of the decree would confront the country with serious challenges.
