GARDEZ (SW): The local officials and civil society in Paktia province have charged member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) Gul Pacha Majidi for encroaching upon an amenity plot meant for public library.
According to the officials, the plot in the provincial capital Gardez city has been allocated by the directorate of information and culture for a public library.
Juma Gul Ahmadzai, a local civil society activist, said in this regard that it is a public property, and should be reclaimed. “I appeal to the government officials to stop illegal activities in the province. On what principles has the Gardez Municipality allowed construction of high-rise building on the property meant for a public library?”
Esmatullah Khalid, Gardez Mayor, told Salam Watandar that the 600 sq. meters of land belongs to the directorate of culture, and has been illegally transferred Gul Pacha Majidi in 2009. Khalid said he was not mayor of the city when this allotment took place. “This is an amenity plot, and the municipality has no legal rights to allot it to anyone”.
He added the matter has been in court. Salam Watandar wished to have the view of the WJ member, but to no avail.
