AISS research indicates radicalization is on the rise

KABUL (SW) – A new research paper on “Religious Radicalism in the Higher Education of Afghanistan” has indicated growing trend of radicalization in universities.

On Thursday, April 9, 2019, the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS), launched its recent research paper titled “Religious Radicalism in the Higher Education of Afghanistan: Analysis of the Political System of Islam Course and its Impact of the Students”. This study explored the religious radicalism at the higher education of Afghanistan-Islamic Political System lectures and its influence on the students. 

Ramin Kamangar, AISS researcher and the author of the research paper, Abdul Hafiz Mansoor, religious scholar/member of parliament, Dr. Abdulmatin Shahidi, lecturer at Kabul University were the speakers of the event.

Ramin Kamangar presented a summary of the findings of the research. He said this research identifies radicalization through the contents of the texts of the three books, "Islamic Political System", which are used in three provinces of the country – Kabul, Herat, and Nangarhar – as a source of study at universities. He added 31 per cent of the responders in this research said teachers of the Islamic studies often underline the importance of Islamic Caliphate.  

He said 34 per cent responders supported democratic system, 17 per cent backed Islamic Emirate while 34.9 per cent back Islamic Caliphate.

45.9 per cent responders considered the current system of governance in Afghanistan as Islamic while 39.9 per cent called for Islamization of the system of governance in Afghanistan.

Abdul Hafiz Mansur, the second speaker of the program, appreciated the research carried out by the AISS and spoke about its importance in the current circumstances. He spoke about the roots of radicalism and the historical experiences of extremist groups and ideologies.
