KABUL (SW) – Raising concerns, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission has called on the U.S, Taliban and the Afghan government to answer critical questions in connection with the proposed exchange of prisoners.
In a statement, the AIHRC said it is regularly monitoring prisons in Afghanistan. “The list of 5000 proposed Taliban inmates has not been shared with it. In addition, we do not have access to detainees held by the Taliban”, it said.
The human rights watchdog stressed all Afghans have the right to access information regarding the peace process, including prisoner release.
It has asked for justice for civilians who suffered due to the proposed Taliban detainees and specific mechanism to allow victims of prisoners to access justice.
The AIHRC has also asked for clarification on how many inmates are in prisons on terrorism related charges, how many attacks committed by the proposed Taliban prisoners were aimed at civilian locations. It demanded this should be made clear how many of the prisoners are charged with war crimes, how many of the prisoners are Afghan citizens, children etc.
