Aid agencies on the run from Helmand

17/01/2017

LASHKARGAH (SW): A number of aid and development organizations in Helmand province have suspended operations due to raging violence.

Departure of these public and private sector organisations has left negative impacts on the state of human rights, reconstruction drive, agriculture, health and education. Officials have confirmed at least two organizations suspended their operations in Helmand just last week.

Mohammad Khan, head of commerce directorate in the province, told Salam Watandar the two organisations that closed down recently were named “DCE” and “Card-f”. Baryalay Nazari, member of the provincial council, said efforts are underway to ensure these organizations do not leave Helmand. He said the USAID has been informed about the prevailing situation. Baryalay said DCE and Card-f are not the only organizations that have left Helmand due to insecurity.

Baryalay, a representative of Card-f in the province, told Salam Watandar a number of factors have led to the departure of aid agencies. Baryalay said attacks on highways, warnings to foreign aid workers and growing insecurity in districts have forced many aid agencies to suspend operations.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has vowed to improve security situation. Umar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, informed a number of clean-up operations are in sight that would help restore law and order.

At least 17 government and non-government organisations are active in Helmand which have provided aid to the local population, and jobs to a large number of people.
