KABUL(SW): The Attorney General Office has sent a delegation to western Herat province to assess the allegations of women claimed to be raped by prosecutors while in custody.

Last week, the Civil Society Institution for Justice in Afghanistan (CSIJA), claimed in a report that the prosecutors and local judges have raped 3 out of 10 women who were in custody.

The report claimed that the same situation was underway in other provinces as well.

The report also suggested that 9 prosecutors and 6 local judges in Herat, 6 prosecutors and 4 local judges in Badghis were accused of raping women in custody.

Asef Fayaz, an official at the Attorney General Office, told a press conference here in Kabul on Sunday that a delegation of civil and military prosecutors, human rights commission and ministry of women affairs have been sent to Herat to consider the cases.

He said that if the claims against the judges and prosecutors turned out to be true, it would be a catastrophe and the culprits would be severally punished.

A week ago, officials at Herat prison termed the allegations made by CSIJA as baseless.
