KABUL (SW) – A day after the final results, former president Hamid Karzai and vice president Abdul Rasheed Dostum, said the presidential polls were ‘not national and were against democratic principles’.
In a social media post, Karzai said: “I had presented in the service of my dear nation in the past as well that holding elections under conditions when fairness and justice cannot be ensured would only lead to crisis, would harm the peace process and weaken the dear country”.
Karzai stressed the peace process has progressed well, and there is dire need for unity.
In the meantime, first vice president Dostum addressed scores of his supporters in Sheberghan, Jawzjan on Wednesday. He said the election commission has lost its legitimacy, and would stand against ‘electoral coupe’. He reiterated support for the ‘inclusive government’ announced by Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, and said inaction would only undermine the struggle of the past 40 years.
During his speech, Dostum received a call from President Ghani.
He threatened not to strike a deal over the people’s vote. Dostum called upon people in every province to elect their own governors. The VP said he would soon hold a meeting with the Special U.S. Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad.
Vowing to begin political resistance, the Junbish party leader said the government based on ‘rigging’ would not be accepted.
