AFJ unhappy with committee tasked to protect journalists

KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan Journalists’ National Federation (AFJ) has expressed dissatisfaction with the work of the government committee tasked to probe cases of violence against journalists.

This was expressed in the National Media Conference on Journalists’ Safety and Security here on Tuesday. Fahem Dashti, member of the AFJ, told the conference that the government has failed to address this serious issue in the past 15 years. He stressed that the journalists are feeling increasingly insecure about themselves and their jobs. He lamented that the committee formed to address these issues has not held a single meeting in the past two-and-a-half month.

Dashti highlighted that the media owners are denying working journalists’ due rights of pension and health insurance. He added the journalists are also intimidated by land-grabbers are other powerful individuals and groups.

Raheemullah Samandar, another member of the AFJ, said journalists in provinces are faced with even worst situation. He also noted with regret that there is no single female journalist working in up to 20 provinces of the country.

Meanwhile, Jamshed Rasuli, spokesman for the Attorney General Office (AGO), said the committee to protect journalists has so far documented up to 679 cases of violence against. He assured journalists justice would be done in this regard.
