Afghans storm social media over the peace deal

30/09/2016

KABUL (SW): The social media has been taken by a storm following the landmark peace deal between the Hezb-e-Islami and Kabul government on Thursday.

A number of facebook users who saw this deal with the former Mujaheden leader Gulbudin Hekmatyar as a wrong move by the National Unity Government (NUG), turned their profile pictures black; as a symbol of protest and grief. Those opposing the moves asserted that justice has been compromised for peace.

It is vital to note thousands of people died across the country, particularly in the capital Kabul when factions of Mujaheden, including Hezb-e-Islami of the Gulbudin turned their guns at each other following the exit of Soviet forces.

Hafiz Akghar, a facebook user has narrated a tale of one of his colleague who cried when he saw Gulbudin inking the peace deal. “I lost my father, and we got orphans because of his [Hekmatyar’s] shelling on Kabul”, the man said. Jalel Tajlil, another user has noted that Gulbudin has entered the political arena to balance the country’s foreign policy in regard to ties with India and Pakistan.

Sami Hamid, a known poet has said that even without arms in his hands, Gulbudin is a threatening person. “Their thoughts give birth to violence, such people either want to kill or silence their opponents”, he remarked.

A number of other facebook users however, are in favour of the deal, and are hailing this important move by the NUG for bringing an end to the vicious circle of violence in the country.
