ASHGABAT (SW): Afghanistan’s Mirwais Omarkhail has won a bronze medal in the kurash competition at the ongoing Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2017 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Omarkhail lost first and second rounds to his opponents from India and Turkmenistan before defeating them in the third round. He, however, lost the match for silver medal to his Iranian rival, and earned a bronze instead. His country mate Ajmal Ishaqzai lost both of his matches to athletes from India and Tajikistan.
Though, Afghanistan’s medal count has improved slightly, but it keeps losing its overall standing on the medal table. After seven days of competitions, Afghanistan stands at 23rd position with one gold, one silver and seven bronze medals.
Afghanistan’s futsal team is scheduled to take on the host Turkmenistan on the 8th day of AIMAG 2017 at 03:30 pm Afghanistan time. Before this match, Afghanistan has won all three of its league matches in this discipline.
Also on the 8th day, Afghanistan’s Nasimullah Sakhizada and Naseer Ahmad would take on their competitors from Iran and Uzbekistan respectively. In chess, Afghanistan’s Habibullah Amini and Sulaiman Ahmad would face each other while Sitara Aziz and Farah Naz would take on rivals from the Maldives and Nepal respectively.
Afghan kick-boxing athletes are also set to take on their rivals in different weight categories on the eight day. Mohammad Nazeef would face his rival from Syria in the 57kg category, Mustafa Omari would face rival from Tajikistan in 75kg category, Ruhullah Mohammad to take on boxer from Uzbekistan in the 85kg category while Shahpur Gulbahari would face his opponent from Pakistan in the 63kg category.
