KABUL (SW): Afghanistan has won the 1st South Asian Regional Zurkhaneh Sports and Koshti Pahlavani Championship held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Arif Paiman, media manager for the Afghanistan Physical Fitness Federation, told Salam Watandar the 20-member Afghan squad has won a total of 13 medals at these competitions to secure first slot among eight competing nations. The medals included ten gold, two silver and one bronze.
Teams from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan featured in these games. The Afghan squad demonstrated exceptional talent both in the team events and individual capacity to secure a total of 156 points. Bangladesh stood at second position with 139 points followed by India with 94 points.
The historic Persian sport of Zurkhaneh was also part of Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 2017). The international federation of Zurkhaneh is head by Iran’s Meher Alizada and its deputy is former head of the Afghanistan Olympic Committee Mohammad Anwar Jagdalak.
