BAKU (SW): On the tenth day of the ongoing 4th 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games (BAKU 2017) in Azerbaijan, Afghanistan managed to win five bronze medals on Sunday.
Four of these medals came in the category of weightlifting (Zurkheneh). At first, Afghanistan secured bronze in the team category, and later Mushtaq Hassan, Ahmad Shakib and Hakeem Ullah secured bronze medals in individual capacities. Abdul Razaq won another bronze medal in the 48kg Wushu for Afghanistan.
Recognized by UNESCO as among the world's longest-running forms of such training, Pahlevani and Zurkheneh rituals combines martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and music. Iran won gold medal in this category at the BAKU 2017. The host Azerbaijan is leading the table with 68 gold, 40 silver and 30 bronze on the 10th day. It is followed by Turkey and Iran. Among the 39 Muslim countries participating, Afghanistan stands at 34th position.
