MONITORING (SW) – Adela Raz, Afghanistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has said the country needs greater support, solidarity, and cohesion from the international community more than ever.
She said this addressing UN Security Council session on the Secretary-General’s latest Report on Afghanistan. Adela Raz said the start of intra-Afghan negotiations is an important but difficult and delicate chapter in the history of Afghanistan.
“It is going to be a true testament of our ability in protecting our shared gains of the last two decades, especially the constitutional rights of women, and we believe that together we can get through this difficult chapter”, she said. The Permanent Representative said Afghanistan and the international community can take a firm step towards joint objective of a dignified and lasting peace in the country.
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, while briefing the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan highlighted key developments around peace, human rights, the humanitarian situation and other pressing issues. The envoy, who is also head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reiterated the imperative for intra-Afghan peace talks and a political solution to halt the conflict.
“After four decades of war, the people of Afghanistan have more reason than ever to hope that this devastating conflict may come to an end", she said.
