KABUL (SW) – The funeral prayers for Sibghatullah Mojaddedi were held at the Presidency here on Wednesday.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, his deputy Sarwar Danish, CEO Abdullah Abdullah, former president Hamid Karzai and former Jehadi leaders attended the funeral prayers.
Speaking on the occasion, Ghani pronounced late Mojaddedi as an influential figure in the Afghan political arena in the past 40 years who always strived for national unity. He hailed the pioneering stance of Mojaddedi against the invading Soviet forces.
He noted the late Mojaddedi ensured peaceful transfer of power upon the end of his presidency.
The spiritual political leader chaired the Loya Jirga (grand council) to approve the Constitution in 2003. He served as speaker of the Masharano Jirga (upper house) from 2005 till 2010.
He was among the pioneering leaders of the resistance movement against the invading Soviet forces, and served as president of the interim government in 1992.
Afghanistan is mourning the demise of Mojaddedi with the national flag flying at half-staff.
