KABUL (SW): Afghanistan’s women football team has lost both of its friendly international matches against a much superior opponent Jordan.
According to Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF), the second match in this series took place in Oman on Monday evening in which the hosts emerged victorious 0-6. For Afghanistan, Shabnam Rohen, Hela Arghandiwal, Sadaf Barish and Sadaf Noori played in the defense, Yasmeen Mohammadi, Shabnam Mubarez, Meka Saifur Rehman, Farkhanda, Mohtaj and Zenat Siddiqi played in the middle-field and Nelaab Ahmadi played as forward.
Afghanistan faced 0-5 defeat in the first match. Before this, under the watchful eyes of Kelley Lindsay, former U.S. national team player, Afghanistan’s national women football team had played five international matches, four of which have been won and only one lost.
Among the 25 players selected for this tour, 13 have been picked from within the country while the rest of 12 players have been selected from among the Afghan women and girls playing football in the U.S. and Europe.
After the series defeat against Jordan, assistant coach Haley Carter hailed the achievements of the Afghan side. "So proud of this team, the score line is in no way reflective of how far this group has come. Five days of training and we competed against a superb Jordanian side. Imagine the possibilities”.
The national women’s team played its maiden international match in 2010 against Nepal, and faced a mammoth 0-13 defeat. The national women’s football team of Afghanistan ranks 106th on the FIFA Ranking while Jordan stands on the 50th slot.
