Afghanistan likely to face Iran after 17 years

KABUL (SW) – Afghanistan is set to face Iran in a friendly football match after a gap of some 17 years in June later this year.

Based on media reports, Anoush Dastgir, coach for the Afghan national team, has sent a letter via Mustafa Meherzad, the caretaking manager for the national team, to Iranian side asking for a friendly match. The reports suggest reply from Tehran is likely to be positive, and a friendly game might be planned in Iran.

The two sides last played a football game during the Asian Cup back in 2002. The game was won by Iran with a clear margin of 10-0.

Based on the reports by Iran’s ‘Warzish-3’ and 90 Television, the Iranian Football Federation has welcomed the initiave by the Afghanistan Football Federation.

The Afghan side has also proposed to donate the ticket revenue from this proposed game to the flood victims in Iran. Dastgir has urged fans to back this initiative.
