KABUL (SW) – Afghanistan joined the regional group to counter human trafficking, an official informed on Tuesday.
Abdul Baseer Anwar, minister for justice, told a presser that joining this group would help fight the menace of human trafficking at regional level. He added rising levels of unemployment, insecurity and financial constraints forced many Afghans to flee the country.
He stressed the government alone should not be held responsible to fight human trafficking, but the non-government organizations and the public should also join hands against this issue. He highlighted the steps taken by the government, including incorporating the human trafficking as a crime in the penal code, in this regard.
Speaking on the occasion, Lawrence Hart, chief executive officer of the International Organization of Migration, underlined the need to develop a database of the victims of human trafficking in Afghanistan.
The moot in Kabul was attended by representatives from Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan.
