DA NANG (SW): Afghanistan is set to take on Oman in the second semi-final for the beach soccer competition in the ongoing 5th Asian Beach Games in Vietnam on Friday.
Afghanistan overpowered Uzbekistan in an important encounter with a clear margin of 9-4 to make it to the semi-final. This historic performance has lifted the moral of the Afghan squad. In the first semi-final the Asian giant Japan will face Lebanon.
Japan beat the United Arab Emirates 6-2 while Oman managed to defeat Thailand 4-1. The quarterfinal between Lebanon and the hosts Vietnam was a 3-3 draw, which allowed Lebanon to reach semi-final on points. Earlier, Japan thrashed Afghanistan 11-0 in a one-sided group match. Japan topped the group D.
In other games, Afghanistan also lost its handball match to Japan. The Afghan side previously lost to the hosts Vietnam, Hong Kong, Oman and Sri Lanka. The Afghan Water Polo team is set to take on Hong Kong on Friday and Thailand on Saturday after losing to China, Uzbekistan and Indonesia in its previous matches.
