KABUL (SW): Afghanistan has improved its standing at the ongoing 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 2017) with a total of six medals including one gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
On the third day, in the men’s 100kg wrestling, Nazeer Ahmad overpowered his rivals from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, but lost his fight for the silver against the host country’s wrestler. He earned a bronze medal for Afghanistan. Afghan athletes performed relatively well in the muaythai competitions. Zahra Rezai defeated her country mate to make it to the silver medal round against the host country’s athlete on Wednesday.
Hayatullah Khairi has also made it to the silver medal round after defeating his opponent from Turkmenistan in the 86kg category. In Taekwondo, Hussain Bakhshi and Hekmatullah Zen lost their matches, and failed to bag any medal. In the same disciple, women athletes from Afghanistan Seema Ghulami and Shukria Ahmadi also lost their matches in the first stage.
In billiard, Saleh Mohammad and Mohammad Raes won against their opponents from Jordan and Philippine respectively, and made it to the quarter-final round. Afghanistan’s only entry in tennis Saeed Sharifi lost 2-0 to his opponent from Kazakhstan. Same was the fate of Murtaza Hussaini in Ju Jitsu who lost to his rival from Mongolia.
With this, Afghanistan stands at 15th slot with a total of six medals while the host Turkmenistan is on top with a total of 101 medals including 43 gold, 28 silver and 30 bronze medals.
