KABUL (AA): Afghanistan’s Under-19 Cricket Team managed to defeat stronger Nepali side to secure top place in the ongoing Asian Qualifying round for the forthcoming World Cup.
Upon winning the toss, Nepal asked Afghanistan to bat first. Despite a decent start, the Afghan boys only managed to score a meagre target of 190 in the given 50 overs. None of the batsmen scored a fifty with Ibrahim Zadran remaining the top scorer with 43 runs.
Chasing the target, Nepali batsmen were outshined by the well-organized spin and fast bowling by Afghanistan. The whole team was sent back to the pavilion in 26 overs with only 49 runs on the board. In previous matches, Nepal defeated Singapore and Malaysia.
Captain Naveenul Haq and Mujib Zadran took four wickets each.
The 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup is an international limited-overs cricket tournament scheduled to be held in New Zealand from 13 January to 3 February 2018. The ten full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) qualify automatically for the tournament. Namibia, which placed seventh at the 2016 World Cup, also qualified automatically as the highest ranked associate member. The other five places in the tournament will be awarded to the winners of the five regional under-19 tournaments.
