Afghanistan continues to dominate Ireland in cricket

30/03/2017

NEW DELHI (SW): Afghanistan continued its dominance over Ireland in cricket with a massive victory of an innings and 172 runs in the 4-day match on Thursday at the Greater Noida, in India.

According to the cricinfo, on a pitch that rendered the Irish finger-spin duo of George Dockrell and Andy McBrine impotent for four and a half sessions, Rashid's wrist-spin was a virile antidote to spice up the final three hours of play on day two. The smoothness with which he set up his dismissals might cause even the most confident Don Juan to sit up and take notes for future conquests.

After winning the toss, the Afghan captain Asghar Stanikzai decided to bat first. The hosts managed to set a massive target of 537 runs in their first innings. Captain led the batting list with his 145 of 209 balls. Young Afsar Zazai also scored a century, and was the second leading batsman with his 103 of 154 balls. Mohammad Shahzad missed the century when he got out of 85 while Nasir Jamal pitched 73.

Chasing the target, the Irish side lost their first wicket in the third over to Mohammad Nabi. There was a little resistance as EC Joyce and A Balbirnie managed a century partnership. But, after them, it was an easy ride for the Afghans. The Whole Irish team were back in the pavilion with just 261 on the board. Rashid Khan took five wickets.

Sensing a victory, Stanikzai put them to bat once again. And, this time it was even worst for the Ireland. The whole visiting side got out for just 104 in 40 overs. This time Mohammad Nabi inflicted the maximum damage by taking six Irish wickets.
