Afghanistan bags gold at SAG 2016

KABUL (SW): Afghanistan bagged its first gold medal at the South Asian Games 2016 as Khairullah Lalzad overpowered his Pakistani rival in the weightlifting.

According to the statistics provided by the organizers, the Afghan athlete won the medal in 75kg category. So far, five days into the competitions, Afghanistan has won a total of 15 medals. This include one gold, three silver and eleven bronze medals. 

Among the participating eight countries, Afghanistan stands at the sixth slot, ahead of Bhutan and Maldives only. India is on the top with a total of 222 medals, followed by Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The 12th South Asian Games are taking place from 5 February to 16 February 2016 in Guwahati and Shillong, India. A total of 2,672 athletes are scheduled to compete in 228 events over 23 sports. Organiser claim the event is unique in itself as it promotes sports with a view to boost up the team spirit as well as an amiable relationship between the South Asian countries.
