KABUL (SW): An eight-member squad from Afghanistan was selected for the forthcoming 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney, Australia, in October
For the selection process, 60 Afghan Wounded Warrior competitors from various parts of Afghanistan competed for eight spots and the opportunity to represent Afghanistan in three events; rowing, seated volleyball, and power lifting.
Top officials from the Ministry of Defence and the NATO-led Resolute Support mission leaders oversaw the selection process here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, NATO Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann pronounced the Afghan participants as shining examples that prove that difficulties are surmountable and are not an excuse to quit.
“You show us that when the going gets tough, we must persevere. Through hard times NATO stands by you. We stand by you as long as it takes to bring about lasting peace and stability. I am convinced that brave and courageous Afghans such as you will make this country a secure place for everyone to live in”.
The Invictus Games 2017 were hosted by Canada with the participation of 550 disabled athletes (military veterans, wounded service persons) from Afghanistan, United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, France, Holland, Jordan, Estonia, Iraq, Ukraine, and Georgia.
