Afghan refugees’ stay in Pakistan extended

21/08/2015

KABUL (SW): Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have agreed to extend the stay of Afghan refugees in Pakistan for two more years.

This was agreed at a tri-partied meeting held here in Kabul that was attended by the Minister for Refugees and Repatriation Syed Alemi Hussaini Balkhi, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Frontiers and Tribal Affairs Abdul Qadir Baluch, the UNHCR representatives and other officials.

The meeting also approved the registration process for the non-registered refugees in Pakistan. For this purpose, a delegation of the MoRR would soon visit Pakistan to verify the registration process. It is estimated some 1.5 million Afghan refugees are registered in Pakistan while around a million more live without registration.

Afghanistan thanked the government of Pakistan for hosting the refugees.
