KABUL (SW): Following rather average performance at the 7-nation International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy-2016, the Afghan men and women’s teams are schedule to return home on Friday.
Jawed Khawar, Secretary General for the Afghanistan Handball Federation (AHF) told Salam Watandar that the national men’s team only managed to defeat Nepal in these competitions. He added that following defeat in the first match against Maldives, Afghanistan win its second match against Nepal. In the final group match, Afghanistan was overwhelmed by a strong Pakistani team with a clear margin of 20-40, which led to the elimination of the team from the race for title.
Similarly, the women’s team lost both of its group matches, which led to its elimination. In the first match, the Afghan side was overpowered by Sri Lanka with a close margin of 16-18 goals. In the second match, the hosts Bangladesh easily defeated the Afghans with a clear margin on 34-7.
In the previous competitions of International Handball Federation in 2014 hosted by Pakistan, Afghanistan men’s team finished as third on the table while the women’s team was placed 5th. Mehdi Hashimi, Non-Resident Afghan (NRA) living in Norway was celebrated as best player of the tournament back then.
