Afghan boxers aim to participate in Tokyo Olympics

KABUL (SW) – The 14-member national boxing team has reached Thailand to join qualifying rounds for the forthcoming Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Nisar Qadirizada, former Olympian and coach of the national team, has said the qualifying rounds for the mega event would commence in Bangkok on 16 April and end on 28 April. He added competent young players have been selected for the qualifiers after an intense training camp for two months.

A total of 43 Asian countries are going to compete at these qualifying rounds for eventual selection of winners in different weight categories for men and women.

According to the Directorate of Physical Fitness, a total of 10 players and three coaches would take part in these qualifying rounds in three different weight categories.   

Coach Qadirizada has expressed hope the young talent would make way to feature in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics hosted by Japan.

Afghan boxers also featured in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics through wildcard entry.
