KABUL (SW) – Following investigations into the allegations of sexual abuse of female footballers, Karamuddin Kareem, chairman of the Afghanistan Football Federation, has been suspended.
The Attorney General’s Office announced here on Sunday that this move followed initial investigations into the case. Fazal Fayz, adviser to the president, has announced that the decision of suspending Karamuddin Kareem comes following probe into the allegations of sexual abuse of female football players by the AFF officials, including the chairman.
Based on the reports, five more top AFF officials have also been suspended in this connection.
There has been no official reactions to this from the AGO or the AFF. However, Kareem and other accused have rejected the allegations of sexual abuse.
It is worth noticing Kareem has been heading the AFF since 2004. His term ended long time ago, but was still serving as interim head until fresh elections are held for the top post.
Khalida Popal, a former head of the women’s football department at the AFF, who was forced to flee the country in 2016 and seek asylum in Denmark, has spoken to the Guardian, together with the players Shabnam Mobarez and Mina Ahmadi and the head coach, Kelly Lindsey, about the ordeal of players within the country and their frustrations with a system that, they feel, has failed to protect them.
