JAWZJAN (SW): Doctors at the Maternity Ward of the government hospital in Jawzjan have been charging women an amount of 2000 to 20,000 AFN for childbirth. A number of women-in-labor told Salam Watandar that if they do not pay this money the doctors will behave rudely with them and even in some cases haven’t allowed them to leave the maternity ward without paying the amount.

According to a report, dozens of mothers give birth to children at the Maternity Ward of the government hospital in Jawzjan every day.

Corruption has haunted this hospital as well, and has increased recently; however, the government has not done anything regarding fighting corruption at the government hospital yet, said Ali Shir Intezar, a civil society activist in Jawzjan.

A number of women expressed their concern about the laziness, lethargy, and corruptness of the doctors at the Maternity Ward of the government hospital in Jawzjan saying that the female doctors have set a fixed price for a childbirth and unless the amount is not paid, the patient cannot leave the ward.

According to some of these women, poor management and corruptness of doctors have provided the means so that the free medicine provided at the government hospital to be sold at the private pharmacies.

However, Hafizullah Jamshidi, the health director of Jawzjan said the demand for money from patients at the government hospital is prohibited and deemed unlawful and those who have violated the law will be punished.

In recent months, according to some reports, complaints against the government and private hospitals for poor quality of healthcare and lethargy of doctors have been high.
