BAMYAN (SW) – An addicted couple in Bamyan province has sold their 12-year-old daughter for AFN 50,000.

According to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission’s provincial chapter, the incident took place in the Waras district. It noted the minor girl has been sold to a drug peddler in the Samochak area. The AIHRC noted that many people are addicted to drugs in parts of this district.

A child protection group noted that many minors are also addicted to drugs here. They urged the government to take urgent steps to address the issue.

Residents of the Waras district said they cannot confirm the latest report. There were similar reports about parents selling off their children in the past as well.

There are no statistics available about the number of addicts in the province.
